More Than a Class on the Schedule
School music programs are far more than learning how to play an instrument and hitting the right notes. School music programs give students a place to belong. For many students, band, orchestra, and choir are pivotal school experiences that provide friendships, mentorship, memories, and skills they will carry with them through life.

Building Confidence Through Community
Different than many classroom experiences, school music programs provide a shared experience for students. Students discover their individual efforts affect the whole group. When each student learns the music and pays attention to their director’s instruction, the whole group grows stronger together.
This environment helps to strengthen personal responsibility and teamwork. The New England Board of Higher Education states that when students work together to create a performance that is cohesive and technically correct, they create a like-minded community. This community becomes a space of belonging and purpose for many students, teaching them teamwork responsibility that lasts a lifetime.
What the Research Says
Beyond social benefits, school music programs often impact a student’s classroom learning and achievement. The American Psychological Association found that students who learned to play an instrument and participated in high school band or orchestra were the equivalent of one grade year ahead of their peers in English, math, and science, as measured by exam grades. School music programs are not just an “extra” class to add to a student’s schedule. They impact students socially and academically, teaching skills that prepare them to thrive in the classroom and beyond.
